Realizing that changing oneself is more realistic than changing the behavior of others, the authors provide a variety of communicative skills that we can cultivate in ourselves to turn conflict into cooperation. Finally, Brinkman and Kirschner (How To Handle Difficult People with Tact and Skill, McGraw, 1994) illustrate how to use these skills with each of the ten problem behaviors. The Machine that Changed the World: The Story of Lean Production (Paperback)When The Machine That Changed the World was first published in 1990, Toyota was half the size of General Motors. Today Toyota is passing GM as the world's largest auto maker and is the most consistently successful global enterprise of the past fifty years. This management classic was the first book to reveal Toyota's lean production system that is the basis for its enduring success. Now reissued with a new Foreword and Afterword, Machine contrasts two fundamentally different business systems -- lean versus mass, two very different ways of thinking about how humans work together to create value. Based on the largest and most thorough study ever undertaken of any industry -- MIT's five-year, fourteen-country International Motor Vehicle Program -- this book describes the entire managerial system of lean production.RRP: $39.95. The Toyota Way (Hardcover)In factories around the world, Toyota consistently makes the highest-quality cars with the fewest defects of any competing manufacturer, while using fewer man-hours, less on-hand inventory, and half the floor space of its competitors. The Toyota Way is the first book for a general audience that explains the management principles and business philosophy behind Toyota's worldwide reputation for quality and reliability.RRP: $49.95. Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production (Hardcover)When Ohno was retired from Toyota in 1978 and began work on The Toyota Production System, Toyota executives worried that he would reveal the secrets of Toyota’s specific techniques. In fact, Ohno wrote an amazing set of brief essays on the thought process and spirit behind the leap from mass production (where Ford wound up at the Rouge) to truly lean production that could accommodate wide variety in continuous flow.RRP: $104. A Study of the Toyota Production System from an Industrial Engineering Viewpoint (Hardcover)Shingo, a mechanical engineer and one of the only outside consultants used by Toyota in the early days, actually did what Toyota had truly feared Ohno would do. He wrote down the specific techniques of the Toyota system. Yet he did it in such an anecdotal way (and in such an awful translation in the original 1981 version) that hardly anyone could understand what he was talking about. This 1989 translation (offered here) is smooth flowing, making Shingo’s insights more accessible and useful, prompting one reviewer to call it the “green bible” on JIT, Toyota, and kanban.RRP: $115.
